They probably are doing some separate caching for audio and video
streams or something. I still imagine it's putting a LOT of wear on
the cdrom drive to play such a file, so you really should fix the
interleaving.

mplayer -oac copy -ovc copy -o fixed.avi bad.avi

Possibly add -mc 0 -noskip if you have problems with a/v sync.
