Have you tried playing the file on the disc AFTER mounting?  Would be my guess you don't have VCD enabled in the first place, but since you cut mplayer output there's no way to know for sure.  Other problem could be the disc is scratched (input/output ioctl error...) or bad drive.  Can this disc be played anywhere, on ANY platform/player?

I would say upload the first 1MB or so to the ftp, but not sure if they would agree, much less have time to look into it...
