Works here. MPlayer 0.90, IceWM 1.0.9.2-7, Debian 3.0 stable, x86.
Works on my laptop too (same software).

I put my icewm preferences to
http://www.ee.oulu.fi/~tuukkat/mplayer/preferences
see if it works with it.

Maybe it's some other program, not icewm, disturbing mplayer.
