Well, first, that should probably be m2v. ;)  Second, that extension is
what I (and other tools like tmpgenc) use to distinguish a raw MPEG video
stream from a properly multiplexed mpeg file.  It's not a hard and fast
rule, but it makes it easier to understand what you're working with.
