[MPlayer-users] streaming problems

no matter what the file format, I can get either audio OR video using 
mplayer and/or mplayer plug-in.
If I set the config file so I see the movie, I "cannot open/initialize 
sound device". If I use the hard-coded options I can get audio but I 
never get video.
I can never do both. KDE 3.0 with ARTS. I have RTFM'd and tried so many 
various combinations I am going insane. Any ideas?
