It plays everything that doesn't need ffmjpeg.
Maybe the new timer stuff is broken for you?
You can disable it by removing timer-win from osdep/Makefile
That will work only for cygwin.

You won't get those messages if you use cygwin console together with mingw
mplayer.
I nevertheless hope to get msys console working one day.
