You'll find that using cdrecord is quite easy. I only have linux exp. but I 
write a cd with the command "mkisofs <filename> | cdrecord dev=0,0,0 
-speed=16 -eject -"

Use cdrecord -scanbus to identify the correct device to record to. If your 
burner is ide like mine then you may need to use some kind of 
"scsi-emulation" I'd imagine the process for OS/X is a little different from 
Linux so I can't offer any advice. As I'm sure you know google can usually 
help :)

Having said all that I'm sure most CDR software is capable of overburning. btw 
if you do find a nice way to chop off the end and or beginning of an AVI 
please let me know because even with overburning I sometimes have files which 
are too big :)

Another possibility is to buy 800Meg CD's although I don't know anything about 
any related issues.
