My AiW Radeon 8500, as well as my Rage 128 works fine with '-vo 
fbdev:xvidix'...  I would suggest you look into enabling fbdev. It works 
much better for me than vesa (less distorted picture on TV-out).

Also, I would suggest you spend $20 (or more) on getting an NVidia card, 
since their drivers support TV-out under Linux/FreeBSD with X, and video 
acceleration like XV & GL, etc.  You'll probably be much better off that 
way.
