AFAIK it's faster than mpeg2enc and produces way better quality mpegs.
It depends on the settings, but for 640x480 it's a bit slower than
realtime on my Athlon XP 1700+, but I use it mainly because the quality
is better. According to many tests it's one of the best mpeg2 encoders
out there.
