Hi,
I am also using a tv card with saa7134 chip, but a patched version of MPlayer-0.91. (Someone posted a patch for v4l2.) I believe that the patch is in the cvs now, so v4l2 should work.
Have you tried to call MPlayer like this:
	mplayer tv://<channel> -tv driver=v4l2
or like this
	mplayer -tv on:driver=v4l2:channel=<channel>
?
If this makes a difference, you should perhaps have a look in frequencies.c. Are your channel numbers listed there?
