[MPlayer-users] getting info from video files

hi!

i'm looking for a program that extracts information about resolution,
audiocodec etc. from video files, because i'm trying to write a script that
automates the startup of mplayer and changes the aspect ratio to fit my widescreen
tv, removes black bars from badly encoded videos and activates ac3-output if
the file contains an ac3-stream. i found avinfo, ogminfo and some program for
mpegs, but it would be much better if there was one program for all formats.
i know theres getid3() but i don't want to install php for this only reason.
but there is a program, which can do it: it's mplayer itself. is there any
possibility of starting mplayer, getting the fileinfo, and then quitting again?
or do you know any other program, that can extract the information?

thanks
kevin
