! Yikes. If my memories of freetype + linux are correct, that gives me 
many days of things to try...:(. As mentioned, I do need to fix it, 
because it makes videos flicker (because of the repeated popups!). 
Annoying really (goes off to try and find command line options to 
disable everything to do with subtitles)...

Heh. I read that and thought it looked OK :). -ao help offered lots of 
options, and the docs say oss is default, but I just tried manually "-ao 
oss" and lo! sound! :). Thanks for the pointer there...
