Better, convert all subtitles to UTF-8 and use -utf8 as commandline
option (or utf8=yes switch in config)

(works like a charm with all kinds of subtitles, even chinese if you
have a Unicode Truetype Font like Bitstream Cyberbit)

example:
iconv -f gb2312 -t utf-8 -o utf8_subtitle.txt old_subtitle.txt

and use a Truetype Font
(ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/communicator/extras/fonts/windows/Cyberbit.ZIP)
