nah, just wanted to butt in with a curious fact about "non-root apps
unable to freeze the kernel".

Well, i'm not sure what causes it, i would guess it's a bug in the 
way the kernel handles devices... but it's not relevant to the issue
being discussed here, so i'll shut up now.
