For a long time I've had a problem with MPlayer that prevents
me to listen DVDs. 

Hardware is a Sony GRX Laptop with a CDR-DVD Combo Drive.
There is no sound 
card but an Intel 82801CA-ICH3 based sound chip. There is no
wire from the DVD to 
the sound chip and sound playback is always done by software
(XMMS needs  
a plugin to play music CDs from this drive). This hardware
works since I 
can use it with other applications. So, no hardware problem.

Distribution is SuSE 8.0 with kernel 2.4.19.  Sound system is
ALSA 0.9.0rc3 
and arts sound server on KDE 3.1. X Windows is 4.2.0.  This
configuration works
with other application.  Xine and Ogle allows me to see and
listen to DVD movies.
So, no underlay software problem.

The MPlayer version I am testing now is 0.9 RC3 updated to CVS
20030207. I have 
tested previous versions, compiled from source and RPM
versions for SuSE 
(packman.links2linux.de) and I have always had the same
problem: DVD playing is OK 
with xv video output and I can see the film BUT not sound at
all. On the contrary,
mp3 audio files works fine.  So, the problem is localized on
the AC3 codec.

Any hints to why I get this error?:
