Arpi,

The -vo xv started working.  I think it may have had something to do
with mga_vid which I just installed during this upgrade.  I ran -vo mga
as root (which just gave green) and from then on -vo xv worked as a user
and as root. 

I so have some new issues with this newer version though.

1. -vo mga is green for root and other users.

2. In metacity, if I use the maximize button the picture is squashed. 
The image goes full screen width, but is way too long and goes far below
the viewable area.  I noticed this version seems to try hard to maintain
the aspect ratio.  I thought it may be a bug with that.

BTW - as everyone knows, MPlayer is a wonderful program.  Thanks for all
your hard work!
