[MPlayer-users] performance vs. wm, or gnome?

Yep, I've been through all of the hd settings, as well as mtrr, and so-forth.
In any case, the hd settings shouldn't affect x11perf results.

Yesterday I copied a complete rh7.1 tree over, chroot'd to it, and started up
X. It was still running slow. This really surprised me. That narrows it to the
kernel, or perhaps some new system service that's eating bus bandwidth in the
background.

The only new process I noticed was kjournald, probably because the filesystems
were migrated to ext3. I don't know how much demand it makes of the system. I
haven't yet figured out how to disable the process. I tried remounting
everything as ext2, which didn't do the trick.

Late last night I also realized that the kernels were more different than I
thought -- I never actually upgraded the 7.1 installation past 2.4.9. So
perhaps it's the change from 2.4.9 -> 2.4.18 that's causing the problem.
I'm testing that now.
