With new binutils the previous error-message disappeared (Thanks for
help...). But, I called
./configure --disable-dvdread --disable-mpdvdkit (because
this old linux system has problems
with dvd-support - I had the same problem
with compiling xine ...)
--enable-qtx-codecs
make
- and I received following error-message:
gcc -O4 -march=i586 -mcpu=i586 -pipe -ffast-math -fomit-frame-pointer

Should I disable gif-support or... I need some additional help.
Thanks Helmut

6.0 and 6.1? That's ancient.
There is no other possibility, because our project run only under SUSE-Linux
6.0, 6.1

Your binutils are too old.
