You were right, it's not a hardware problem.
And no, it's neither a mplayer bug :)
The problem is (was) in drivers/cdrom/cdrom.c of the kernel sources
where the blocksize was set to 2352 for raw read, but never set back
to 2048 again.
My patch now sets the blocksize to 2048 on every open, unless the
drives is already in use.
Please test this patch and report me any problems especialy when
you have dvd drives or ide cdromdrives as i dont have any at hand.
