I use aspect=4/3 for encoding from TV at 480x576 and find it useful.
My system is too slow for 768x576 and as far as I know (there was a
very interesting message on -dev a few days ago), the TV signal does
not carry much more information than 480x576 anyway.

For ripping a 16:9 DVD I do scale, since if I plan to watch them
mainly via TVout, I would otherwise encode more lines than are
displayed.
