By your description I am certain that the disc hits the layer
transition at that point in the film. It could be that your drive
does not support multi-layer DVDs, or that ability is damaged. (you
said it didn't work in windows either, right?)

For some reason the drive is unable to change disc layers. Either due
to the drive or a badly mastered DVD. Try to obtain another copy of
that disc and see if the error continues.

of LOTR [the standard 
edition, not the extended one] and regularly at the same point
[during 
the Elrond council] the playback stops abrutply.

MPlayer does not crash but the image stays still while the CD seems
to 
look for ever and ever for something it does not find.
I tried also with ogle on Linux and with the ATI Window$ DVD player
on 
win98 getting always the same behaviour.
Choosing a chapter after Elrond's council does not help because in
that 
case the movie just doesn't start.
Using the -ss option in mplayer does not do any good either.

When I tried on a Hi-Fi DVD player, at the "bad" point it stopped for
a 
second but then it moved on and the playback was perfect, so it does
not 
seem a disc problem [and no scratch is visible on the disc surface].
The only thing I found out about the disc is that it seems to be a 
UDF-only disc.

Any idea? Which kind of debug info do you need for this kind of bug?
