I just messed around for a bit, and I didn't have any trouble running
mplayer on a BGR 16-bit or 24-bit VNC server (BGR 8-bit didn't work).
Perhaps your X version is old? I'm using XFree86 4.2.1. In any case, you
might as well fill out a bugreport (read DOCS/bugreports.html) and
include your VNC version and the parameters/configuration you use to
start it.
