[MPlayer-users] Audio Lag and Index Problem

Hi,

I've been using MPlayer as my player of choice for quite a while and am now 
trying to get into encoding some of my DVDs. I started with the NTSC version 
of Life is Beatiful and ran into the following problems:

I used the following command line:

mencoder -dvd 1 -alang en -o test2.avi -oac mp3lame -lameopts vbr=3:vol=8 \
 -ovc lavc  -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1602:vhq:vqmin=2:keyint=11 \
 vlelim=-4:vcelim=9:lumi_mask=0.05:dark_mask=0.01  -vop \
 scale=720:336,crop=716:572:2:2 -ofps 23.976 -zoom -aspect 4:3

The bitrate was way too high resulting in a 1.2 Gig file, but that is not the 
problem. 

At the end of encoding I got the following output:

Notice the difference between the length of the audio and the video stream.

When I checked the resulting AVI file, the first thing that struck me was that 
MPlayer had to re-generate the index. Shouldn't the index be written to the 
file even when using one-pass encoding?

I also noticed a lag in the audio of around .5 seconds towards the end of the 
movie. Sound is fine in the beginning, but in the end the lag is noticeable.

I would be really grateful for any help.

Do I need to get into three-pass encoding to fix this?

A am using MEncoder 0.90rc2-2.95.3 on SuSE 8.0 with a 2.4.19 Kernel if that 
matters.
