Would you like trying the RH8.0 rpms from http://atrpms.physik.fu-berlin.de/mplayer/?

The build above creates an mplayer against libpng 1.2.x:
$ ldd /usr/bin/mplayer |grep png
libpng-1.2.2-8

It looks like mplayer doesn't depend on a particular libpng version (at least
it seems to work ;).
