Hi there, 

A really interesting *and quite intensive* benchmark on libavcodec has
been published by Rémi Guyomarch and is available at :

http://rguyom.ath.cx/ (link taken from the ffmpeg homepage)

It was done using mencoder and fiddling with quite a few libavcodec
options. The study is quality-oriented rather than filesize- but it is a
great read to all of us encoding-frenzies.
