Maybe your DVD-ROM has some region protection of some sort.
try to look for a firmware update for it.
(this is a good place to start looking www.rpc1.com :)

[Automatic answer: RTFM (read DOCS, FAQ), also read DOCS/bugreports.html]

Mark and Otvos,
Thanks all for the tip. But there were other symptoms
which indicate some other problem. As I have said, it popped up the video
window and started playing but only for a second or so, after which it
quit(for both DVD discs).

I also noticed (for both DVD discs):

1) "dmesg" showed a lot of I/O errors for the DVD drive

2) On MS$ windows (win2k) running on the same system, the OS just failed to
recognise the medium, as if the discs were not in the DVD drive !!

These were rented DVD's which played on a commercial DVD-player just fine.
So I am wondering if there is something else (some extra protection crap)
going on.

I guess I will try out ur tip next time I rent a DVD.

- Nil
