Hi,

I am new to mplayer also. I had a similar issue. In my case my Savage S3
graphic card and X server was running with a depth of 24 planes. I switch
this down to 16 and now mplayer works just fine. (Mandrake 9.1)

Use xdpyinfo to see what depth you have set and if not 16 give it a try.

Look for a DefaultColorDepth line in the screen section of your
XF86Config-4 file. (usually /etc/X11).

Another weird hiccup I have see I started using mplayer with dvd's and
Hauppauge TV card. Now xawtv needs a -novx in order to not have a
scrambled screen. With out a -novx I appear to get a scrambled screen
left over from the last mplayer session, audio is fine (its not the depth)
probably just another X server bug/side affect but weird all the same.
