It may have been some other X problem, like DISPLAY or authentication. 
If x11 worked when xv didn't, maybe the server you were trying to 
display it on didn't have Xvideo enabled. I know there have been many 
times I've followed rabbit trails while troubleshooting because of false 
assumptions.
