Well in my experience 2500 kbps is hardly ever too much, so if I make
standard SVCDs I never use VBR format. Especially "soft", low contrast
scenes (e.g. fog, night scenes, underwater) look pretty bad in VBR
encoding as the VBR "engines" always seem to think those scenes need
less bits than they do need. I've played around a bit with the
experimental h.264 (MPEG4 part 10) encoder and it's still got the same
problem... grrrr.
