[MPlayer-users] mencoder/crop => image distortion

For this movie:

VIDEO:  MPEG2  720x576  (aspect 3)  25.00 fps  8000.0 kbps (1000.0 kbyte/s)

this encoding did the trick:

mencoder -dvd 14 -sws 2 -oac copy -ovc xvid -xvidencopts
bitrate=1272:me_quality=5:4mv -vop scale=704:542,crop=714:550:2:12 -o
movie.avi

However, the Y-rescale from 550 to 542 seemingly has no effect on the XViD
encoder, they both look ok, although I'd expect XViD to choke on the X:Y
704:550. Except for the X:Y size of the movie, there is (strangely?) no
difference between XViD encoding it in 704:550 and 704:542...

Beside the point, but it was only the intro that needed X cropping, the
movie itself was actually 720:552, so I ended up with crop=720:552:0:12, and
NO rescaling since the XViD, strangely enough(?), produced a good video with
Y(552) undivisible by 16... how can that be?
