No problem, i use the Bitstream Cyberbit Font (free, tell me if you
can't find it) and
have no problems with chinese characters as subtitles.
Of course, i changed the subtitle file's encoding to UTF-8
and used the option to tell mplayer it's UTF-8

For your characters, Arial TrueType should be ok.
(you can get it http://corefonts.sourceforge.net/)

I made the conversion to UTF-8 of the subtitle-files with mozilla
(open file, set encoding right, then copy+paste everything to gedit
and save it - gedit saves to UTF-8 as default)
