May I suggest installing ffmpeg?
Get the latest from CVS.
untar and cd into the directory
./configure (if you have the appropriate devel packages 
--enable-mp3lame, vorbis, etc.)
make
#make install

before you recompile MPlayer

Make you you are in the MPlayer directory
cp -r /path/to/ffmpeg/libavcodec/ .
