setterm -clear >/dev/tty1

you may also want to do this before mplayer starts:
setterm -blank 0 -cursor off >/dev/tty1

I'm working to get a linux box able to play video from a timetable using
cron and framebuffer, but i can't get it to work right: mplayer plays
video right, but when it finish leaves the last frame on screen, which
is a problem: i use a script to launch a image viewer after mplayer so a
await screen is displayed, but, obviously, it doesn't work.
