You probably want to do "xvinfo" as well. There are many times the X 
server supports XVideo, only to report the following:

twirl(3) ~ >xvinfo
X-Video Extension version 2.2
screen #0
  no adaptors present

On an i810 system with XV enabled it should say something like this:
[root at vectra tftpboot]# xvinfo
X-Video Extension version 2.2
screen #0
   Adaptor #0: "I810 Video Overlay"
     number of ports: 1
     port base: 55
     operations supported: PutImage
     supported visuals:
       depth 16, visualID 0x23
       depth 16, visualID 0x24
...
