Out of curiosity, do either of you get any errors in the system log?
$ tail -n 40 /var/log/messages
...and see if anything corresponds.

The only time I get bad playback (besides an overloaded/flaky network
connection) is sometimes when I play a DVD and get these errors:

---SNIP---
hdb: packet command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdb: packet command error: error=0x54
ATAPI device hdb:
   Error: Illegal request -- (Sense key=0x05)
   Media region code is mismatched to logical unit -- (asc=0x6f, ascq=0x04)
   The failed "Report Key" packet command was:
   "a4 00 00 03 6c 59 00 00 00 0c c4 00 "
---SNIP---

I've never really known if that's a hardware or software problem,
though....
