Let me second that bug report, I have the exact same behaviour here.
mpeg files generally work, divx do not. Independent of -vo as well.

But this is probably an ffmpeg problem, unfortunately sf archives are
(once again, shitty source forge) down...

Thank you Catalin,

if I understand your hint correctly, you are telling me this is due to
the
stream being interlaced?

But (in that case, excuse me otherwise and please hint me further),

1. is it really reasonable to assume that the top and bottom half is
exactly identical on a bitlevel?

2. isn't it strange that other interlaced movies I play do not show this

behaviour?

Best Regards,

Caj Zell

Without -framedrop, A-V sync can drift a little, and mplayer will try
to correct the situation as soon as it can (e.g. when it gets to a
part that takes less cpu time to decode). So it's mainly an issue if
your cpu is just borderline fast enough to play the movie... In this
case, without -framedrop, A-V sync will jump around slightly in the
very complicated frames of the movie, whereas with -framedrop,
framerate will drop/stutter when it gets to these scenes. IMO the
former is usually less noticable.

If your box is really slow, you probably always want -framedrop.

Over 90% of my DVDs have very strange title settings. As you probably
know anime DVDs often split then main movie over multiple titles
(sessions). Sometimes it's really strange: title id 4,7,13,14 for the
main movie etc... Some DVDs contain over 30 titles, and title 1
is not the main movie (17 ;). In such cases it's just easier to
use a menu IMO. But I just use ogle then, as dvdnav in mplayer is
just not useable and maybe not usefull neither...

The dvds I buy have more than one program on them. The menu helps to
separates and let me know which one I want to see in what order. It's
real handy to be able to preview your dvds without having to play the
entire movie.

Ok, but if my CPU is fast enough to play every scene with no problem, is

"-framedrop" smart enough to understand it has to do nothing or will it
drop/stutter anyway?
In other words, if you are looking for "general purpose" MPlayer
options, does it make sense using "-framedrop" *always* because anyway
it gets activated only when there is really need [i.e. depending on the
scene *and* on the CPU speed] or is it better to use it *only* with slow

CPUs because otherwise complicated scenes will be "skipped" even though
you have enough CPU power to see them correctly?

Thanks,
Roberto

Hi,

IMHO, a good DVD navigator is the only lack of MPlayer. Once I said
that, I
use Mplayer for DVD movies (with a tree struct not too complicate) for
most
of educational DVDs, Mplayer is unusable: too much titles ....

I really wish a DVD navigator tool for MPlayer.

Guillermo.

It was in the pilot message of this thread available here:

That did indeed fix it.

Will keep that in mind.

Of course. Variable would be even nicer.

Hi,

About the following:

Q: My tuner works, I can hear the sound and watch the video with
MPlayer, but MEncoder doesn't encode audio!
A: TV audio encoding for Linux is currently unimplemented, we're
working on it. At the moment it works only on BSD.

With the btaudio driver under linux 2.4.18, audio can be captured
directly from a bt878 card without using a cable from the TV card audio
out to a sound card audio in. The driver will create a /dev/dsp?
device, so this has to be told to mencoder/mplayer. For my WinTV card
the dsp rate is fixed to 32000, but this may be different for other
cards. Works fine for me using mencoder (and audio is in sync with the
video). Mplayer however did not route the sound towards the soundcard,
have not analyzed this yet.

Can somebody add this to the FAQ? (the btaudio part).

eric

Hmm. Most of mine are much cleaner than this. But I always rip to
mpeg4 anyway rather than watching the original DVD. That was the DVD
doesn't get scratched, and I can fix any interlacing/telecine crap.

My take on the whole situation is that DVD is a really nasty format
(made for TV framerates rather than film, silly menus and extra junk,
timestamps randomly resetting in the middle of the stream which make
seeking without first indexing the whole disc impossible, etc.). So
yes DVD is a nice way to obtain high quality copies of movies... But
it's not a nice format for actually *watching*... :(
