i rememnber days i used nvidia, taking the agp support off usually helped. 
read the installing notes or something like that where those xfree options 
are explained.

though, your system shouldn't crash with nv driver, as that doesn't give you 
afaik any acceleration.. are you sure it's cooled enough?

you mean that avifile is able to play everything nicely but mplayer crashes 
your system? very very strange.. does mplayer crash your system when you'r 
root and/or when non-root?
