I am using your same setup, only without KDE, did you upgrade you XFree? look 
in the patches dir in Slackware 8.1 NOT CURRENT and look for the tgz.

Maybe KDE places a window on top of the root window,for placing the icons et 
al. try using another window manager to see if this is the problem.
