I was able to convert it to .wav with sox (version 12.17.3), and then 
play it with MPlayer (see logs at the bottom of this mail).

AFAIK MPlayer doesn't have a demuxer for .au
If anyone think it's an useful thing to have i can try to write it 
(shouldn't be to difficult).
