Sorry to answer your question with a question, but I was also wondering

I have some DVDs which I can only back-up with dvd::rip by setting the 
environment variable:
export DVDCSS_METHOD=title
And I have others which I can only back-up with dvd::rip by setting the 
environment variable:
export DVDCSS_METHOD=disc
I actually emailed the dvd::rip developers and got a combo-box added to 
dvd::rip to set this :-)

However mplayer's libdvdcss doesn't seem to honour these variables - or 
at least setting them doesn't have the desired effect of enabling the 
dvd to play.
Is this functionality available under mplayer's libdvdcss?
