What kind of card do you have?
A Creative Labs Live?
Then the only thing you will need is the '-channels 6'.

Subject: [MPlayer-users] Subject: rc5 audio tests w/ surround 5.1 + 6
channels + alsa 0.9.2
[Automatic answer: RTFM (read DOCS, FAQ), also read DOCS/bugreports.html]
Hi,
I have made experiments with rc 5 and the latest Alsa release. My objective
is
to attain full 5.1 audio decoding while viewing a DVD. The command line I
use
is:
/usr/local/bin/mplayer -ao alsa9:surround51 -vo xv -dvd 1 -channels 6
The result is as follows:
1. When I use DVD backups (read, not protected) I (seem) get the full 5.1
output. The output however seems to have its channels mixed. Center seems to
start on the rear right.
2. When I use original DVDs (region 2 as above, read PAL) I get A/V
syncronization problems. The video lags behind the audio. Strangelly enough,
this lag grows gradually but you cannot tell wether the video or the audio
is
wrong. Mplayer reports a slow system. Output also seems to suffer from the
same problem above (see 1.).
3. When I play back any of these DVDs by down-mixing (default) I don't get
A/V
sync. problems, nor do I the 'slow' message from MPLayer.
Additional observations:
When I do get 5.1 output (back-up DVDs), I hear the dialogue on the left
rear
(wrong) and then later it goes to the center (ok). I only seem to get the
correct output after I jump forward or backwards with the arrow keys. I get
this behaviour from Mplayer whether or not it is an original.
Initially I configured and tested the Alsa set-up by using the utility
'ac3dec'. I used it to read and output the vob files directly from the dvd.
I
could not however do these tests on the originals, because the utility
(understandibly) cannot do this.
I tried various suggestions and have the following comments:
- It is not a CPU related problem. With a 2.5 Ghz machine I got a
load of
more or less 40% to 50%.
- I doubt it is a broken file. I did try -forceidx and -mc 0
(seperatelly) to
no avail.
- I doubt it is slow media. I tried -cache 8192 / -nocache to no
avail.
- I doubt its a video problem. I am using ATI's firegl drivers.
Please see
the relevant system information at the end.
I need informationm on how to diagnose this further. Any comments and/or
suggestions are welcome. What follows is a verbose output of a session and
after that I include additional system information.
TIA,
Hugo Ferreira.

and I also get quite a few of these output to screen:
************************************************
**** Your system is too SLOW to play this! ****
************************************************
Possible reasons, problems, workarounds:
- Most common: broken/buggy _audio_ driver
- Try -ao sdl or use ALSA 0.5 or the OSS emulation of ALSA 0.9.
- Experiment with different values for -autosync, 30 is a good start.
- Slow video output
- Try a different -vo driver (-vo help for a list) or try -framedrop!
- Slow CPU
- Don't try to play a big DVD/DivX on a slow CPU! Try -hardframedrop.
- Broken file
- Try various combinations of -nobps -ni -forceidx -mc 0.
- Slow media (NFS/SMB mounts, DVD, VCD etc)
- Try -cache 8192.
- Are you using -cache to play a non-interleaved AVI file?
- Try -nocache.
Read DOCS/video.html and DOCS/sound.html for tuning/speedup tips. If none of
this helps you, read DOCS/bugreports.html.
