Just an update:  it still doesn't work.  Any suggestions on how to solve
this?

TMPGenc can convert these AVI files to MPEG, and these MPEGs can then be
turned into VCD images (using mencvcd) which remain in perfect sync.  I hope
that clue helps.

Again, I'm not able to subscribe to the list, so I'll periodically the check
