[MPlayer-users] Mplayer and redhat 9 failure

Hi all, I just compiled mplayer on redhat 9 (using a fresh gcc, not
redhat's gcc) and when I run mplayer I get the following error:

mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: libxvidcore.so: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory

the file in question (libxvidcore.so) is in /usr/local/lib, where it was
put by the build process for xvid which I downloaded from xvid.org. I
tried recompiling mplayer and including the following flag: 

--with-xvidcore=/usr/local/lib/

I have done everything the same as when I compiled mplayer for redhat 8.
what am I missing?
