Come to think of it, -framedrop or -hardframedrop may have an effect, 
though I haven't tried it. Yup, sure enough. I just tried -framedrop 
playing a very high quality movie which my machine can't handle. No more 
annoying popups, just jerky video! I'll have to add that to my default 
options. Thanks for asking.
