mplayer is doing exactly that, it tries to keep the buffer filled.
If it doesn't work, then your drive probably can't keep up the data rate
required, it may have problems reading the dvd (Scratches?).
Or maybe you don't have DMA enabled on your DVD drive (man hdparm; AFAIK
there's some extra magic needed on Redhat).
