vmax_b_frames=1 also helps

I usually use:

mbd=2:mv0:trell:cbp:precmp=2:cmp=2:subcmp=2:\
vmax_b_frames=1:predia=2:dia=2:preme=2:vme=5:naq:v4mv

That's from extensive testing of one particular clip, and I'm fairly
confident each one of those settings will not screw up other sources
very much. I don't mean to say that's definitely-the-best; that's just
what I use. Bear in mind, also, that adding quality-increasing options
slows down the encoding time significantly.

...but beware, however, that the default hqdn3d values will get rid of a
lot of desireable detail if used on a clean source. Make sure to
experiment with hqdn3d in mplayer before you settle on values to give to
mencoder.
