mplayer -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video0:input=1:width=720:height=576 -vo x11 -framedrop -vop pp=0x20000 tv://

You have to select the right input. I'm using it with the composite input and a camera and works OK. Also change v4l2 for v4l if you are using 2.4 kernel series.

I'm having the same problem, i can watch v4l stuff fine in other apps
but using the same command as you showed doesnt work... it gives the
same message you got..... how did you solve it?
