[MPlayer-users] mplayer only as root

Hi. I have a bug (at least I think so, I've built the latest version,
the latest CVS and looked through the faqs (both) and documentation.
I've also experimented and the problem remains. The bug: I run mplayer
as root, and it runs ok (dvd playback, many different files played back
including avi's and mpg's). I run mplayer as non-root and playback is
slow and jerky. I've looked at google and saw that /dev/rtc could be a
problem, so I changed the permissions and users allowed. Problem
remains. As mentioned before, the CVS sub-version does not help (as
before, it runs perfectly as root, but very slowly as non-root). When
playing (encrypted) DVD's as non-root, it eventually gives an error
message 'too many packets in buffer'.
My system: RedHat Linux 9.0 updated with yum, running Linux kernel
2.6.0-test7
My audio: Soundblaster Live Value
My video: Nvidia Ti4200 with a patched Nvidia binary driver (to work
with the new kernel).
Intel pentium4 @ 1800 MHz overclocked by 5% to 1890 MHz.
1GB of PC2700 DDR memory.
I must also mention that -nosound does improve things somewhat, but
video is still jerky. There are no problems (audio or video) when
running as root.

Startup sequence:

I modified /dev/rtc to crw-rw-rw- 1 bob users 10, 135 Jan
30 2003 /dev/rtc
(to allow all read access, and chowned it from root/root to bob/users,
no success). I have downloaded new codecs and deleted the old ones
prior to installing the new ones to make sure there were no old ones
lying around. I also ran chown -R bob.users mplayer/* to make sure
local users had access to all files at the top of the mplayer source tree.

Thanks in advance,
Bob
