That is just too easy.  interesting that on a 7.3 box with X 4.2 X
chewed up very little cpu but mplayer was eating over 40%

on the 7.1 box with X 4.1, X itself was eating up an additional 35-40%
of cpu  leaving nothing for anything else.  

One I installed the gatos binaries for each X version, total cpu usage
dropped to less than 7% 

Now I am off to learn about different scaling algorithms.
