[MPlayer-users] sdl test fail

i have try today to use mplayer with sdl driver, just to see...
and i get the following :

Disabling DPMS
DPMSDisable stat: 1
SDL: Initializing of SDL failed: No available video device.
FATAL: Cannot initialize video driver!
init_vo failed

FATAL: Couldn't initialize video filters (-vop) or video output (-vo)!

any idea of shell commande i can launch to prospect the problems ?
I am supposed to have SDL installed...
SDL-config birng me:
1.2.4

i'm under a debian woody.
I'am supposed to be out of X11 to launch mplayer with sdl ?
